The place we stayed at was huge and amazing, and the company I had was pretty rad too. A couple workshops were pretty great and eye-opening, and there was a great speaker-and-a-half. I purchased a pretty sweet Daniel Johnston poster that will be going up in my room as soon as I bother to sort everything out. I got some buttons, but am not sure what happened to them. Our team from Ai overcame all but one team in Design Trivia, which was pretty awesome considering it was the speakers & friends.

Great times aside, there were a few incidents. A little drama amongst our group, and little bigger issue between me and my now ex-girlfriend. I think I made things okay, but only time will tell.

The night I got back from Design Camp, I also ventured to the Electric Six show with Josh and Breanne. A new album is always exciting, and a live show probably equally if not more exciting. There was some jackass kid on his friend’s shoulders, plowing into people. He got justice, when he fell on broken bottle bits. Not hard, enough, unfortunately.

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to hang out with my good buddy Zach. We had a good time listening to some music, and he played some of his music that he was working on that is much more bitter and angry than his other stuff. Very fun. We also checked out a free, preview screening of The Darjeeling Limited on Thursday at the Lagoon, which was a LOT of fun.

I have had some strange experiences adapting to using the bus everywhere, and have missed many stops with many blocks of correcting those mistakes. I’m really grateful for the people who have carted me around. I probably wont tell you in person, but assume you read this for some blindly, selfish, and lazy reason.

The potential of this idea is gigantic. You have a restaurant that is themed around space aliens. If you’ve seen Toy Story, you might have the romantic picture of Pizza Planet with the wacky little three-eyed alien guys. But how can something like this glorious vision possibly encompass any negative qualities whatsoever? I have experienced Space Aliens Grill & Bar and have become compelled to write about it. The first thing I’ve written in this in ages, and it’s fueled by frustration. Shit!

I arrived at the site. The parking lot is just hell of packed– half of Blaine is at their new restaurant. That is a slight exaggeration. They’ve got a pretty damn big parking lot, and it was pretty damn full.

I went in to find that there was quite a large crowd and, sure enough, quite a long wait. In exchange for them writing the word “Jeene”, I was given a wait-’til-it-flashes-and-vibrates thing that restaurants give out for people waiting. It wasn’t your average, boring circle, but something that looked like a stun gun. I later found that it did not function as one.

Before that, though, my mom tried to play a game where you stack bricks. She lost because she thought the idea of the game was to hit the button a few times, randomly, really quick. It errored after her first game, and she put two tokens into the machine. Darn, that didn’t fix it! She goes and tells an employee it didn’t work. She comes back and puts two more tokens in the machine. What? The error didn’t go away by feeding it more tokens? Oh, the man told you to just put more tokens into it. That’s some quality technical advice.

Jumping ahead to being seated, we’re in some generic large red square section of the restaurant. It feels very much like a high school cafeteria. This description could partly take from the majority of the other customers being little high school girls and boys who try to look like Paris Hilton, and, I don’t know, metrosexual quarterbacks. I don’t remember it being this bad when I was in high school, not two years ago.

Two the right of the room is a huge area in which a projector was pointed at. With a restaurant name featuring “Space Aliens”, what kind of programming would you expect to be shown? If you answered “baseball”, I hate you. This was only the first thing that really destroyed the atmosphere for me.

I tune my ears to the radio above. What kind of music is it? Spacey, electronic, experimental? Not quite. It’s top 100 music! Nothing communicates “Space Aliens” like the latest Fall Out Boy single.

How about the visuals, that’s got to be pretty awesome, right? Wrong! It felt like the place tried to decorate as generically (well, for a space alien themed restaurant) as possible. The booths had some of those circular purple lightning discs you can find at Spencers and other novelty stores. The cups were translucent red plastic cups that you could just as easily find at any Perkins or Italian restaurant. Their salt and pepper could have been straight out of the grocery store, as there wasn’t actual salt and pepper shakers. The redeeming element was the strange fries holders. Function looked like it must have followed form. I think the owners must have thought, “Maybe they’ll look past all of our other decorating shortcomings if we serve the fries all wacky.”

As for the space aliens, they were pretty generic, too. The ovular head that meets a point at the bottom with big, solid eyes. The rest of the “characters” around the place were pretty forgettable. There was just no personality in any of it.

Now the food, I had no complaints. That stuff was pretty good. I split a pepperoni pizza and garlic bread pizza. The crust on the pepperoni pizza eventually started tasting like popcorn to me, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but something to note. According to their website, they have America’s best ribs. I saw a lot of people eating them, so I suppose that’s possible.

The service wasn’t terrible, but it was a bit too busy and our waitress seemed a little new and negligent until we asked her for refills. She was really helpful after that. So really, just go there for pickup. The food’s not bad, but it’s really not the dream restaurant it could be.

Let’s see what’s new. Things are going really well. I’m doing pretty poorly in two classes, Print and Speech, but the low grade is only going to get me to kick my ass into good-grade-ness or something. In Print, I had a C- at midterm, but I’m pretty sure I aced the big test we just took, and I’m incredibly satisfied with my last project. Speech I’ve got a little harder work cut out for me.

A big reason my last Print project was something I’m so proud of is the great amount of time I spent on it. This would not have happened, were it not for the gal above. That’s Nicole and she’s pretty great. I’m a real lucky guy.

I’ve been finishing my days exhausted lately, and most-of-the-time getting some good sleep. I’m going to actually try to see how much I can get right now. I will probably write again soon. I have things to say.

The quarter started a few weeks ago, and it’s not too bad. Print Production is cool, but a lot of work. It’s my only real “core” class I’m taking. Speech is kind of kicking my ass. I don’t know why I suck so bad at speaking, but hopefully I’ll learn a thing or two. Ethics isn’t bad, it’s a pretty breezy class. The teacher has a hat that he wears all the time and makes him look like he belongs on Team Zissou. I think that’s why I like the class so much. 3D Modeling was horrifying at first, and slightly horrifying still. The difference between the other classes, is I feel like I’m genuinely learning something big and new. I made a little space gun for my first project and I think it’s pretty sweet.

I keep forgetting it’s Monday. I’m oblivious to the fact that I just came off a weekend. Life’s so fast. I need a few days of relaxation and a few more to get bored and want to go back to being busy.

I also need to make plans on moving out and studying abroad. Those are my two short term goals right now, other than passing speech class. I hope to move some place in northeast downtown, kinda by the University of Minnesota. It’s close to my school, and that means less commute, which means more sleep (or at least I’m hopin’).

Studying abroad has also recently hit me as something I really need to do. Travel hit me young, and I’m hungry to take off again. There’s something about Australia that’s really called to me. I’d kill for some warm, sunny weather over this cold. I think the place just symbolizes happiness and positivity for me, and that’s what I’m really lookin’ to find. I’ve generally tried to become a lot friendlier and optimistic, and I feel my gold might be in Australia.

Tonight was a New Years pretty unlike previous New Years. The ball drop wasn’t the highlight. I’m not even sure I’ve been really conscious this whole break that a new year is here. Time hasn’t really been something I’ve had a good or even decent grasp of. Hours, days, dates, months.

My night began by cancelling my original plans to go downtown. There was no way I was going downtown in this weather. In reality, I was probably on the road just as long going the opposite direction, but that wasn’t really the point. Getting stuck in Blaine is a lot less of a big deal than getting stuck in a place I don’t really know downtown. Sorry for bailing at the last minute, Tommy.

Ross was host to the night’s festivities. Most of the festivities actually happened outside, though. The fresh snow was calling. It was dizzying, how much we had fun in Jake’s Jeep. Totally safe fun, really. At least, I don’t remember any occasions where we were remotely fearing crashing or going into the ditch. We did, however, get to see a few other people with those problems.

It was nice seeing Ross and hanging out with a few of the old crowd. It was a bummer there were some missing in attendance, but I hope they had fun elsewhere. We had a nice time rockin’ out to Metalocalypse, eatin’ pizza, and playin’ games. We discovered that Ross has some kind of ping pong instincts that can overcome many obstacles. I mostly had fun yelling to the point of hurting my voice, for the night. I haven’t gotten to be that obnoxious in a while. Thank you for putting up with me, everyone there.

Okay, one week left of break and it’s back to class. Jason’s party is on Saturday, and Josh is buyin’ spaghetti for some friends and me. That’s the only real plans I got. There’s this freelance work I’ve been doin’ in increments, but I’d really like to get that done before school’s back in session. I need some motivation. I’ve been plenty awestruck, just not awe-inspired. I’m not sure if there’s a difference, but hopefully I communicated a difference.

It’s almost five in the morning, but I’m pretty awake and kind of feel like watching a movie. I’m bummed because I really shouldn’t. Tomorrow I will watch a movie. Gnight.

Christmas Eve is pretty much over, I think. I’ve been laying in bed due to feeling like an anvil with something funny in it’s non-existant stomach. That can’t be remotely correct sounding, but eh, comprehension, whatever.

The most important thing of the day, was that the beef tenderloin was delicious. I don’t think I’ve been dissatisfied with beef tenderloin. It’s probably my favorite thing in life. Personally, I didn’t think there was enough pepper. I like my my beef tenderloin peppery enough to cause me to sweat profusely. It’s got to be some kind of deep seeded masochism.

Other relavant things that happened were the rocking of team No Ma’am beating whatever crappy name the girls came up with in Cranium. It was a four card landslide. They didn’t stand a chance. Immediately following Cranium was the excitement of making Grasshoppers. I guess I downed mine especially fast, surprising the adults, and receiving praise from my cousin Paul.

Before this whole Christmas-related ordeal, I spent some time up in Breezy Point with Josh. That was fun, despite it not being cold or snowy enough to go snow tubing. It was also a bummer we were bailed on. Regardless, we enjoyed the change of scenery and our probably-fatal eating habits. Also, it was my first time driving in snow! That was pretty fun, to be honest.

Now, I feel it’s time I should be productive for break. I neeeeed to get my freelance work done, or at least mostly done. I’ll dedicate a day to that very soon. I also need to replace the power supply in one of my computers because Jake and Gaustad think it’s dead. It probably is. Poor baby. Someone should kick my ass to get these things done, because I need discipline.

Oh, and everyone should watch and enjoy the little music video Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake made for SNL, because it’s easily the funniest thing on the planet the past 24-hours-or-so for me.
